SAN FRANCISCO — House Democrat and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi is reportedly preparing to end her historic tenure in Congress, with sources close to her office suggesting she will not seek re-election in 2026.
Pelosi, 85, has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1987 and remains one of the most consequential figures in modern American politics. After nearly four decades representing San Francisco, her expected retirement would mark the end of an era defined by party discipline, sharp political instincts, and a groundbreaking legacy as the first woman to serve as Speaker of the House. Not once, twice.
While no formal announcement has been made, several senior aides and longtime allies say Pelosi has privately signaled that this term will be her last. According to individuals familiar with her thinking, the decision stems from a mix of personal reflection and recognition of a generational shift within the Democratic Party.
“She believes it’s time for new voices,” said one adviser, who described the decision as “deeply considered, not sudden.”
Pelosi has remained active even after stepping down from party leadership in 2023, often serving as a mentor to younger members and a stabilizing force during moments of internal division. Her absence will leave a sizable vacuum in Democratic fundraising and strategic coordination, two areas where she has long been considered unmatched.
If confirmed, her departure would set off a high-profile race for her San Francisco–based congressional seat — a safe Democratic district that nonetheless carries symbolic weight. Already, several potential contenders, including local and state officials, are reportedly positioning themselves for what could become one of the most watched House primaries of 2026.
Throughout her career, Pelosi has been known for her steely composure, her ability to count votes with near-perfect accuracy, and her refusal to back down from political fights — whether over healthcare reform, government shutdowns, or presidential impeachments.
Her possible retirement would close the book on one of the longest and most influential careers in U.S. legislative history.
A formal announcement is expected early next year.
“She’s done her duty — and then some. When Nancy Pelosi leaves, an entire chapter of American politics leaves with her.”
