Moana 2 and Hollywood

Set to release on Nov. 27

Disney has confirmed the release of a sequel to the original Moana on November 27. The announcement has been eagerly awaited by fans of the first movie, who will be pleased to know that the sequel will feature the same voice actors, including The Rock as Maui and Auli'i Cravalho as Moana.

In 2020, Disney initially planned to develop a TV series based on the movie Moana for its streaming platform, Disney+. However, the project was later revised, and instead of a TV series, a sequel to the original Moana movie was announced for release in theaters in February 2024. This decision surprised many, as the expectation had been for Moana to be adapted into a Disney+ series rather than a theatrical sequel.

Premise

After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she has ever faced by facing off against wicked underworld gods and many other challenging creatures. To complete her mission of reconnecting all of the people and communities of Oceania, she must summon her old demigod friend for help and new ones.

Development

During a Disney Investor Day meeting in December 2020, Jennifer Lee, the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, announced that they were developing a musical series titled Moana, based on the 2016 film, for Disney+. In August 2021, there were reports that Osnat Shurer would once again be the producer. Then, in January 2022, it was revealed that David Derrick Jr., who was a storyboard artist for the original film, would be the writer and producer. The series was being developed at the same time as the live-action remake of Moana, as per Jared Bush's statement.

In February 2024, Disney CEO Bob Iger excitingly revealed that the series had transformed into a captivating theatrical sequel named "Moana 2." It was announced that Derrick and Shurer would continue their involvement in the project. As anticipation built, the release of the first trailer in May unveiled Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller as co-directors, joining Derrick in steering the creative direction of the sequel. Furthermore, it was disclosed that Christina Chen and Yvett Merino had been appointed to take over the responsibilities of producers, succeeding Shurer in shaping the film.

This is a developing story and will be worked on in the future.
